While there are no shortage of wildlife-themed slots available, Playtech slots are the latest software company to reanimate the tried and tested topic with their five-reel, 40-payline title, the Roaring Wilds slot.

As you’d imagine from the name, the slot’s highest value icon and substitute wild is a ferocious bear, with a variety of carnivorous creatures including jaguars and eagles playing the supporting roles. Below these unique symbols, you’ll find the standard playing card values, but there’s also a bear’s paw scatter symbol that can be used to trigger the game’s free spins feature when three or more appear.

Playable from as little as £0.40 per spin with all paylines enabled, the Roaring Wilds slot machine can be enjoyed across all desktop, mobile and tablet devices and is a relatively plain game that is nevertheless visually appealing. The backdrop includes a mountain range and what looks like the Aurora Borealis lighting up the sky, while the soundtrack is atmospheric and littered with animal roars when a payout is hit.

While minimalist designs are certainly no bad thing in the often garish world of video slots, the same cannot be said for minimalist features. This is a real problem for Roaring Wilds as there is only the aforementioned free spins game to talk about – and even this “extra” is not particularly rewarding.

As mentioned above, the bonus is triggered by landing paw print scatter symbols on at least three of the reels on any given spin. Achieve this and you’ll be issued with 15 bonus games, with a further 15 spins available if you manage to pull off the same trick a second time during the original play-through.

That being said, the bonus has no additional modifiers or multipliers, making it a fairly simplistic affair that doesn’t really capture the imagination. True, any winnings accrued can be gambled in the standard card-picking feature, but even this doesn’t save the slot from its lowly 93.60 RTP percentage.

“Bear” Necessities?

All told, Roaring Wilds really is a game that does the “bear” minimum. While we’re happy to tolerate basic slots if they’re rewarding, a maximum jackpot of 1,000x and a low RTP really doesn’t fit the bill.
